Hmmm...I'm no writer.

MMMM...Garamond Ampersand

I am a visual person. However, my work and academic experiences thus far have taught me never to underestimate the power of the right words at the right time, or in my case specifically, the right words combined with the right imagery. I have been feeling compelled lately to write. To express in a tangible way the things I am thankful for. To let my kids know that I am proud of them where they can see it all of the time.

Random thought-I have a long standing love affair with type. I love letters. I love the abundance of different shapes. I love to be able to make an ampersand and stick it on my door and look at it all day. Particularly the ampersand from the typeface called Garamond. (for those who read this before, I misspoke, it is the lowercase g from Mrs. Eaves) Why do I love letters? Several reasons. I think partly because of what I mentioned above: their power. But they also have physical characteristics. They have emotional ties. They have personalities. They carry memories inherent to their time period. They can be perfect for a project or wildly inappropriate. They speak of their designers. They tell us of their users, the writer's likes and dislikes. Oftentimes revealing gender or mood. I know I am not the only typophile out there. There are many of us. We are strange and perhaps a little off center, but also, I think, a little better off for our insights and interactions with type.

There is a line from one of my favorite movies that goes, "I don't really want an answer. I just want to send this cosmic question out into the void. So good night, dear void." Remember what that movie is? It's a good one.

I love that you love type, because someone has to! Some people are passionate about things like chocolate, exercise, or computers, but you? You like letters. Weird.
